Holism and Healing

True health is more than just the absence of illness.

It is a vigorous and vital relationship between three important parts of the self: the physical, psychological and spiritual. These important dimensions of the self, when awake and active, constantly interact with each other and together contribute to wellness. Additionally, when animated and functioning, these dimensions constitute the cornerstone of holism and personal balance.

Awaken the slumbering self.

Often taken for granted, one or more of these dimensions are likely slumbering in daily life. Crisis of any sort, whether it initiates a loss of health, loss of social standing or the loss of a loved one, can awaken the dormant qualities of the self to help re-establish balance and wellness. Crisis can catapult one to see the world, and the self, differently. This might include a new awareness of the many facets of the self not seen before. This new life perspective leads to an increase in one’s awareness of these dimensions and an expanded consciousness of the world and our place in it.

When actively used, the three dimensions enhance our quality of life by providing us with more options to maintain balance and health.

The physical dimension of life is the part that is generally seen and tangible. Our physical body—and how it is affected by the environment—is our primary indicator of how we interface with the known physical world. The psychological dimension gives us both personal and collective information of the nature of the self and the world at large through behaviors, emotions and thoughts. The spiritual dimension is the unseen world, subjective in nature and connected to “all that is,” the mysterious, inexplicable part of the self that links us to the deeper, yet more elevated parts of the self.

I believe that the time has come to adopt a new mindset

that combines the empiricism and practicality of allopathic medicine with the intuitive, creative aspects of complementary care to achieve a truly holistic form of health-care. Just like we have interacting left and right hemispheres of the brain, for health and healing to be complete, all aspects of the self need to be used to be in full alignment. Developing a fully integrative form of healthcare will ultimately benefit us all.

A person does not have to be ill to heal.

The healing might be mending of inner blocks such as a judgment against the self that is connected to a past event. For example, a client of mine, Cindy, believed that she was no good and had a very low opinion of herself. She had unfortunately grown up in a household where her overbearing father constantly criticized her mother and her. As a result, she had grown into adulthood with a very low self-esteem. However, Cindy was able to develop an awareness of how she had separated from her most loving parts. When she was later having difficulty in her marriage, she became aware of these old judgments against herself and was able to release them, forgiving herself for judging herself. Once Cindy had healed this block, she expressed that she felt an advancement of herself into a higher consciousness. Freed from a major block, she experienced a sense of relief and a new lightness of being which gave her an entirely new perspective on herself, her marriage and her life.

Holism is a chief contributor to planetary wellness.

We are multidimensional beings, and these dimensions extend beyond the self into the vastness of life, connecting us all and influencing our planet. We all have experienced the deleterious effects of personal and planetary imbalance. Since we can only contribute that which we have within, personal healing has a profound and infectious influence on global healing. When we repair our former blocks, the fragmented world we live in that pressures us to hide our multidimensionality, becomes a little bit healed. In this sense, we are contributing to the wellness of the world simply by healing ourselves. This is why it is paramount that we keep these dimensions awake and constantly interacting, especially through the hustle and bustle of life, when they are easily forgotten.

Each individual, whether it is through illness or wellness, can strive to live an abundant, healthy and happy life simply by allowing mind, body and soul all to be alive and active. The planet will respond and rebound.

Like attracts like,

and when we are balanced within, it is natural to attract health. Abundance is a by-product of balance and gives us a healthy and happy life. Becoming aware of the psychological, spiritual and physical dimensions is the first step of creating a healthy and balanced interior. The next step is to become aware of the blocks we have in these dimensions that ultimately prevent balance. When these blocks are removed, the healthy flow of energy breaks through and fully awakens our authenticity. Then it becomes natural for health and wellness to manifest.

Put your higher, more authentic self in charge.

Regardless of whether you are healing from illness or involved in personal growth for other reasons, the ultimate goal in holistic health is for the ego to step back as the leader of awareness, and the higher, most authentic self to take charge. Although ego’s role as intermediary between self and the world is important, it does not supercede the development of the mind, heart and soul. The authentic self can take the reins and drive the vehicle of our consciousness, with the ego as helpful assistant to maneuver through the human experience. This shift from ego as leader is vastly important as it heralds a new beginning of how people relate to each other and the future wellness of the planet. Health and Holism then become one as these two concepts combine to create a more elevated concept of wellness and balance.
